Review of Divergent by Veronica Roth

Divergent (Divergent, #1)Pages: 496
Publisher: Katherine Tegen Books
Released: May 2011

Plot: Beatrice Prior lives in her Dystopian Chicago city confined to the faction she has been born into-Abnegation, the selfless, just one of the 5 divided factions of people that create society.
However it is drawing close to Beatrice's 16th birthday and soon she will make the biggest decision of her life, stay in abnegation with her family or move to another faction alone. Beatrice doesn't feel she belongs to Abnegation though, she's not selfless and has to restrain herself not to speak out and soon realises Dauntless, the faction of the brave is more to her suiting. Beatrice's choice allows her a fresh start as 'Tris' and soon discovers that initiation is a long fight between others who have selected Dauntless. Alongside this, Tris has to come to terms with the prejudiced views of her from others and a hidden secret that not even she understands, that she is Dauntless and in danger.
Can Tris manage to win her place as a Dauntless member of will she become factionless and lost or possibly worse?

Good Points: Okay now I know that I've reviewed this series the wrong way around and you may have already read the review I did on Insurgent which I didn't exactly like however I loved this book! Divergent is a great debut novel from Veronica Roth. Divergent follows in the footsteps of the popular surge of Dystopian fiction. Tris's character I thought is great and I loved the whole idea of the different factions and the general plot overall. I loved the chapter including the paint ball challenge, I just think it was a perfect way to start to allow the characters to interact and for us as the reader to get a closer look into the growing relationship between Four and Tris.
This book is filled with energy and it had me begging for more after finishing it. This book is just a great combination of Action, Drama and Romance including shockers here and there that will blow you're mind and Veronica Roth seriously knows how to keep you on the edge of your seats whilst reading! Loved it!!

Bad Points: Okay yeah it is a little 'average-girl-falls-for-handsome-guy-thing' but so what! Tris's character is not weak and she is anything but average, she is strong on the inside and she manages to deal with every problem thrown at her whilst remaining sane enough to fight for her place in Dauntless despite people being stabbed in the eye...in their sleep!

To Sum Up...  Read this book when it first came out and L.O.V.E.D this book! I don't care that I didn't like the second book because I just remember that I still have this one to read, it will always be a book that I want to read and we still have the concluding volume in the series to look out for yet, so you never know Veronica Roth might just be able to change my opinion. :D

  1. Awesome review, though I didn't love it as much as you. I gave it just a 3/5.

  3. I really enjoyed this book too. Although I did find all the death a little unnecessary. Maybe it's just me. But it was definitely well-written and I would call it more plot-driven than character driven. Still and AWESOME debut novel.
